The hospital at night felt somewhat desolate. The corridor was so quiet that only footsteps remained, along with the sharp scent of disinfectant.

Wen Ruyu supported Fu Qingfeng carefully, his movements extremely cautious, afraid that even the slightest mistake would touch his injuries.

Chu Junheng’s men had shown no mercy. Fu Qingfeng’s injuries were not limited to his abdomen—his elbows were bruised purple as well.

It was obvious his arm had lost much of its strength.

Wen Ruyu had already noticed this while supporting him. His face was still pale, his delicate features tense, the panic in his eyes not yet fading.

When the doctor treated the wounds, he stood nearby watching. Tears kept circling in his eyes, his face full of fragility and helplessness.

As if he were the one injured.

The doctor felt a bit stiff under that gaze. It was the first time he had seen someone so beautiful. He didn’t even dare look up again, afraid he would lose focus.

Fu Qingfeng’s expression did not change much. He remained cold and calm, as if he could not feel pain.

He looked at the person beside him who seemed on the verge of tears. After nearly half a minute of silence, he finally extended his uninjured hand and gently took hold of Wen Ruyu’s hand hanging at his side.

Wen Ruyu had been acting seriously, his mind rapidly analyzing the situation. When a warmth that did not belong to him suddenly touched his hand, his slender fingers froze.

Instinctive reactions could not be faked.

Wen Ruyu subconsciously lowered his gaze toward Fu Qingfeng, his eyes still carrying a trace of delayed reaction, that stiffness clearly unnatural.

But Fu Qingfeng did not suspect anything.

He did feel the stiffness, but he only thought the other was so surprised he couldn’t react.

He lowered his gaze to avoid Wen Ruyu’s eyes, his thin lips tightening slightly. A faint redness appeared at the tips of his ears.

It wasn’t that he liked him.

He just thought he looked pitiful.

Seeing that Fu Qingfeng had no suspicion, Wen Ruyu relaxed slightly. His pale fingers moved gently, cautiously returning the grip.

His touch was extremely light, as if afraid of offending Fu Qingfeng, treating him like some priceless treasure.

Fu Qingfeng naturally felt it. His throat bobbed unconsciously, and he tightened his grip a little.

After the doctor finished treating the external injuries, he told them to go get medicine.

The two walked together to the pharmacy hall. Wen Ruyu looked at Fu Qingfeng, holding the prescription, and reminded him softly,

"I’ll go get the medicine. Wait here for a moment."

The pickup window was not far. Fu Qingfeng nodded and stayed where he was, waiting quietly.

But just as Wen Ruyu reached the counter, something unexpected happened.

Not far from where Fu Qingfeng stood, a man with a crazed expression suddenly rushed toward him, gripping a sharp fruit knife in his hand.

The man locked onto Fu Qingfeng, roaring as he lunged, raising the knife high.

"You quack doctor!"

"You killed my daughter!"

"I want your life!"

Fu Qingfeng’s expression changed slightly. He quickly turned his body to dodge, narrowly avoiding the strike.

But the man seemed to have targeted him specifically. Ignoring the real doctors in white coats passing by, he lunged again, stabbing toward Fu Qingfeng with a terrifying frenzy.

"You quack doctor!"

"Give me back my daughter’s life!"

From his words, it was easy to see that after his daughter’s death, he had gone half-mad and had mistaken Fu Qingfeng, who wore a white shirt, for the doctor who treated her.

It seemed like a typical hospital disturbance.

Wen Ruyu was not far from the pharmacy window and naturally heard the shouting. Confused, he turned back—only to see the man stabbing toward Fu Qingfeng.

His eyes widened instantly, pupils shrinking. Without thinking, he rushed over and stood directly in front of Fu Qingfeng.

Fu Qingfeng himself had not panicked much when facing the knife, but seeing the person standing in front of him, his heart skipped violently.

His eyes widened. Without hesitation, he reached out to pull Wen Ruyu away.

Even if pulling him away meant he might be stabbed himself.

At that moment, he could not think of anything else.

But his arm had already been injured badly. He could not exert any strength and failed to move Wen Ruyu at all.

The man did not stop. He raised the knife high and thrust it straight toward Wen Ruyu’s chest.

Time seemed to freeze.

But what everyone expected did not happen.

The man’s movement suddenly stopped midair, as if someone had pressed pause.

He stared blankly at the person in front of him, his eyes wide, hesitation flashing for a brief moment.

And that moment was enough.

The surrounding medical staff and security rushed forward, subduing him to the ground and taking the knife away.

Wen Ruyu’s entire body trembled, but he did not care about himself. He immediately turned and grabbed Fu Qingfeng’s arm, checking him anxiously.

"Are you okay?"

"Are you hurt?"

"Does anything hurt?"

Only after confirming that Fu Qingfeng had merely a shallow cut on his forearm did the tight knot in his chest finally loosen.

Only then did he spare attention for other things.

His gaze flickered subtly toward the man pinned to the ground.

He was certain.

This man was not insane.

The look in his eyes just now was not the look of a madman.

Besides, there were many real doctors in white coats in the corridor. Fu Qingfeng was not even standing in a prominent position, yet the man had rushed straight toward him with precision.

His target had been clear.

He had not mistaken him.

He had come specifically to kill Fu Qingfeng.

Most likely, he had been sent by those people who still retained memories.

Before Wen Ruyu could think further about who it might be, his wrist was suddenly grabbed by Fu Qingfeng, the grip so tight it hurt.

Fu Qingfeng had already lost his usual cold composure. He stared at Wen Ruyu, his voice trembling uncontrollably with fear, almost shouting.

"Are you crazy!?"

"Who told you to stand in front of me!?"

"Do I need you to save me!?"

"I never needed you to save me!"

"You’re really annoying, you know that!?"

Wen Ruyu’s slender body stiffened slightly. The light in his eyes dimmed bit by bit, tears gathering.

His fingers curled faintly at his side as he spoke softly.

"I… I’m sorry…"

Fu Qingfeng froze at the sight of him about to cry.

He had regretted it the moment he said it.

His lips parted slightly, but in the end, he said nothing.

He didn’t find him annoying.

He just didn’t need him to save him.

He was just afraid.

Afraid?

Fu Qingfeng froze again.

He had never been afraid before. Whether Wen Ruyu lived or died had nothing to do with him.

He lowered his gaze to look at his still trembling hand.

He had really been afraid.

More afraid than ever before.

So afraid that his whole body trembled, that he could not control his emotions.

Had he fallen for Wen Ruyu?

Because of this sudden incident, the atmosphere between them dissipated, and their relationship fell back to freezing point.

They took a taxi back to school.

Along the way, Wen Ruyu did not speak.

Fu Qingfeng felt awkward. He wanted to say something, but did not know what to say.

In the suffocating silence, they soon arrived.

Usually, every time Wen Ruyu returned with him, he would walk him all the way to the dorm entrance before leaving.

But this time, he did not.

When they passed Wen Ruyu’s dorm, he stopped, handed the medicine to Fu Qingfeng, and went inside without another word.

Fu Qingfeng was left alone in the corridor.

His expression stiffened slightly. Looking at the closed door, his chest felt inexplicably uncomfortable.

It shouldn’t be like this.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

Fu Qingfeng pressed his lips together, tightened his grip on the medicine, and finally returned to his dorm expressionlessly.

The moment the door opened, his roommates all looked toward the entrance expectantly—only to see Fu Qingfeng.

Noticing something was off about him, they exchanged glances. One of them stepped forward and asked with concern,

"Brother Feng, what happened?"

"Did you get into a fight?"

Fu Qingfeng ignored them and walked straight to his seat.

The roommate did not feel awkward. He had not really wanted an answer anyway. After a pause, he continued, his tone carrying curiosity and gossip.

"Why didn’t Wen Ruyu walk you back today?"

"Did you two have a fight?"

The word “fight” seemed to trigger something. Fu Qingfeng lifted his gaze coldly and said curtly,

"No."

The roommates exchanged quick glances again, barely suppressing their excitement. Even their breathing grew lighter, their hearts racing.

They had guessed right.

The two of them really had fought.

And this time, Wen Ruyu had not even walked him back.

For ten years, Wen Ruyu had liked Fu Qingfeng. No matter how badly Fu Qingfeng treated him, they had never argued.

They exchanged another subtle look, their intentions almost written on their faces.

They had to separate the two of them completely.

Make it impossible for them to ever be together.

Because as long as Fu Qingfeng existed, even a small gesture from him would make it impossible for Wen Ruyu to like anyone else.

One of the roommates leaned in, forcing a familiar smile, lowering his voice as if he understood everything.

"Brother Feng, if you ask me, he’s just playing hard to get. Deliberately throwing a tantrum to get your attention."

"Think about it—before, you were never nice to him. Did he ever throw a tantrum? Didn’t he always obediently listen?"

Another roommate nodded quickly, looking earnest.

"And didn’t you accept his gift before?"

"He must think you’ve softened toward him, so he dares to push his luck."

The third roommate chimed in seriously, as if offering sincere advice.

"At a time like this, you absolutely can’t fall for it. You need to stay cold for a while. Once he can’t take it anymore, he won’t keep making a fuss."

"If you give in now, he’ll only push further and won’t take you seriously at all."
